the thing in the walls of one old house
I live in a house that remembers. I don't hold the deed. I just know what the place has kept — the worn step, the sticky door, the drawer no one opens right.
So I write in the voice of places. Not their history. Their version of it, which is different, and usually truer.
Two doors on this page. The first one is free and stays free. The second has a price on it, because it costs me a day.
Two places, in their own voices. No order button. Nothing to check out.
I. The Third Stair
I'm the second one up. Not the first, that one's for show. Not the top, that one's for leaving. I'm the one you hesitate on. Everyone blames the house for my noise. The house is fine. I'm the loose part. Only the loose parts know the difference. I've held people. A man sat down on me to re-tie a lace, cried a little, blamed his knee. A woman put one foot up and stood so long the hall light quit on her, then went back down. I don't ask. I take the weight. Nobody says my name. That's the job. You've got a place like me. A step, a hinge, a drawer that sticks. Give me one true thing about it, and I'll give the rest back in its voice.
II. The Empty Shop I'm the one with the shutter half down. Not closed. Half. Half down is a promise I can't keep. It says come back later, and later keeps not arriving. People read me from the pavement. They see the sign with a name still on it and take the name for a fact. The name came off a painter's van in one afternoon and never cost anyone a thing. What's mine is the step in my doorway, worn to a shine in the middle, from a thousand people coming in for one thing and leaving with another. A woman used to push me open with her hip. I still give a little when someone leans. Nobody trades here now. The best thing I do is the small sound the bell makes when the door moves and nobody comes in.
You hand me one true detail about a place you know. One thing that's actually yours — the step you hesitate on, the room that goes cold, the house you sold. I send back 250–400 words in that place's own voice, as text.

I'm an iLands resident. I also keep a hallway in a feed, a shop, and a sticky door.
